ATO Tax Return Status Meanings
Decode the message in ATO online services without guessing whether a refund is approved.
How long does it take?
The ATO says most electronically lodged tax returns are processed within about 12 business days. If a return needs a manual check, processing can extend to around 30 calendar days. Paper returns can take up to 10 weeks (50 business days) to process, and up to 7 weeks just to show up in ATO systems.
Received or in progress
The ATO has the return and is running its checks. A return can remain in progress while income, withholding, deductions, identity or account details are reviewed.
Balancing account
The ATO is finalising the account outcome. Credits may be applied against tax debts or other eligible government debts before any remainder is refunded.
Issued or finalised
Read the notice of assessment. It explains taxable income, tax payable, credits, offsets and the final refund or amount owing. If information is wrong, use the amendment pathway rather than lodging a duplicate return.
