Median super balance by age (ATO Taxation Statistics 2021-22)

The median is the honest peer benchmark — half of Australians in each band have less, half more. Averages (mean) are skewed by a minority of very high balances, and are shown here only for context.

Frequently asked questions

How much super should I have at my age?
The ATO publishes median member balances by 5-year age band: roughly $33k at 30-34, $72k at 40-44, $115k at 50-54, $201k at 60-64. These are medians — half of Australians have less. The ASFA Retirement Standard target is $630,000 at age 67 for a single comfortable retirement.
Is median or average super more useful?
Median. Average balances are skewed upward by high-balance outliers — the ATO mean at 60-64 is ~$355k vs median ~$201k. Median is the honest peer benchmark. Half of your age band has less than the median; half has more.
What is the ASFA Retirement Standard?
ASFA (Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia) publishes quarterly estimates of what retirees need. March 2026 quarter: Single comfortable 55,923.00 per year (needs 630,000.00 at 67); Single modest 36,434.00 per year (needs 110,000.00); Couple comfortable 78,566.00 per year (needs 730,000.00). Assumes home-ownership and partial Age Pension.
What growth rate does the calculator assume?
7% nominal p.a. (≈4.5% real after 2.5% inflation), net of fund fees. This sits between the long-run ASX 200 total return (~9%) and the more conservative 4-6% real assumption that APRA fund member outcome assessments often use. SG contributions are added at 12% of salary from 1 July 2025.
What if my salary doesn't match the band average?
Enter your actual salary. The ABS averages we default to are $83k at 30-34, $95k at 40-44, $96k at 50-54 — reasonable mid-career anchors but nothing like universal. Lower salary means lower SG contributions and a bigger gap; use the calculator to see how extra monthly contributions close it.
Is the concessional cap modelled?
No. The $30,000 concessional cap (2025-26) rarely binds for median-salary workers — SG alone at 12% of $90k salary is $10,800, and carry-forward rules allow unused cap from up to 5 prior years. If you'll be salary-sacrificing large amounts, model it with the Super Contribution Optimizer instead.
