How the reverse calculation works

  • Binary search: The engine picks a midpoint gross, evaluates it using the same forward tax engine, then halves the search range toward the correct answer. It repeats until the calculated net is within $1 of your target — typically 30–50 iterations.
  • HELP & salary sacrifice honoured: If you toggle HELP debt on or enter a salary sacrifice amount, each iteration of the search re-applies the full forward calculation including the required reportable-super add-back, so HELP and MLS income are not understated.
  • 2026-27 and 2027-28 rates: Switch the tax year in either scenario editor to compare the 15% and 14% lower brackets. The engine also applies LITO and the enacted WATO where eligible, subject to their non-refundable limits.

Frequently asked questions

How does the reverse salary calculator work?
A binary-search algorithm narrows in on the gross salary that produces your target net. Each step applies the selected year's resident tax brackets, LITO, WATO when active, Medicare levy, optional HELP repayment and any salary sacrifice you enter. The loop converges once the result is within $1 of your target.
Does it account for HELP/HECS repayments?
Yes. Toggle HELP debt on in either scenario and the selected year's marginal repayment thresholds are included. Salary-sacrifice contributions are automatically added back as reportable super contributions when repayment income is calculated, as required by the ATO.
Can I compare two different target incomes at once?
Yes — baseline and alternate run in parallel. The defaults are $100k and $150k net. Edit either target, switch to 2027-28 rates, add salary sacrifice, or change residency status independently. The delta card at the top shows the gross difference between the two goals.
What tax year does this use?
The calculator defaults to 2026-27 and lets you switch each scenario to 2027-28. The next year's 14% lower bracket and enacted Working Australians tax offset can change the gross salary required.
Does salary sacrifice reduce HELP or Medicare levy surcharge income?
Salary sacrifice reduces taxable salary, but reportable salary-sacrifice super contributions are added back when HELP repayment income and Medicare levy surcharge income are calculated. The calculator applies that add-back automatically; it is not an optional assumption.
